Origins of Gallina de Mos Chicken

This breed was created in 1940 in the Galicia region of Spain. They enjoyed some popularity but soon declined in number due to a rise in factory farming. They were in danger of becoming extinct by the end of the 20th century.

In 2000, the Xunta of Galicia began a recovery and conservation program for the Gallina de Mos breed. Today, they remain rare but are considered to be “recovering.”

Some Things to Know About Gallina de Mos Chicken

These birds come in one color, called leonado, which is a warm buff color that lightens around the neck and saddle hackles. Their tail feathers and sickles are black colored, as well as their inner wings.

They have small heads, red faces and earlobes, a pea comb, orange eyes, a prominent chest, and a small tail. Their wings are small and tucked tight to their body, and their legs are clean and yellow.

This is a hardy breed that prefers to be in a free-range environment over being in confinement. They have an active temperament and enjoy having space to roam around and forage for food.

They do well in both hot and cold climates and are overall a hardy breed.

The Gallina de Mos chicken is a hardy, healthy breed of chicken. Due to their pea comb, they are not prone to frostbite in the winter. They do well in all climates and are resistant to many diseases that affect other breeds of chickens.
