Buying Chicks Online
Buying chicks online is an option if you can't find what you're looking for locally. In fact, sometimes it's a much easier and more convenient option.
An online hatchery I've used before is Cackle Hatchery. I'm happy to recommend them because I had an awesome experience, and wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
They stock hundreds of different breeds, ship all over the U.S., usually have some awesome offers on, and their customer service is awesome.
You can check out Cackle Hatchery by clicking here.
Tips When Buying Chicks for the First Time
Buying newborn chicks is fun and exciting! Don’t lead it with your heart though, here are some tips to help you find healthy chicks:
- Start by trying to find a hatchery that has been recommended or has some good feedback online. This will save you wasting time calling or running around.
- When you arrive to pick your chicks up take a look around their premises and other animals they keep if you can. It’s always a good sign when they operate with good practices.
- Take a good look at the birds you’re buying. Pick them up and look at their eyes, nose, and vent. They should be clean and not have any mites or dirt in their fur.
- Let them walk around a little while you’re watching. If anything looks out of the ordinary, raise it with the breeder to see what they say.
- Ask if they’re part of the NPIP and what diseases they check for in their flocks.
- You should also ask about how they recommend you care for them over the coming days. There is loads of great information online, but breeders raise chicks all the time and have some awesome advice.
What Does NPIP Mean?
When looking for poultry breeders you may have noticed some of them are NPIP certified.
NPIP stands for the National Poultry Improvement Plan. This certification was introduced to help deal with poultry diseases causing havoc in the industry by enforcing more rigorous testing and vaccinations.
Breeders, hatcheries, and other businesses selling chicks and other poultry are not required to be part of the NPIP by law. Most are, however, as it does demonstrate they following good practices looking after their livestock.
