Online Hatcheries
Buying online is a great option if you can't find what you're looking for form local hatcheries. Or, if you just want the convenience of having chicks, hatching eggs, etc delivered to your door.
There are a few online hatcheries. I've used Cackle Hatchery before, and my experience was awesome so I'm always happy to recommend them.
They have more than 200 varieties of poultry to choose from, competitive pricing, quick turnaround times, and awesome customer service - Click here to check out Cackle Hatchery.
What to Look for When Buying Chicks?
If you’re buying chicks or chickens for the first time, here are some basic tips that might make all the difference:
- Take some time to find a breeder with a good reputation. Ask around for recommendations, read reviews, do a little research. You don’t want to waste your time or buy chicks that haven’t been properly cared for.
- When you arrive, check out the hatchery/farm grounds and other husbandry they keep. Look for signs that they care about all their animals, not just the ones they’re showing you.
- Carefully look at the birds you’re buying. Look for any signs of discharge or dirt around their eyes, nostrils, and vent. If there is, this is a sign they might be sick.
- They should also have bright and alert eyes. Be moving around freely, and breathing normally without their mouths open.
- Ask the breeder about vaccinations, if they’ve done anything or they recommend you do.
- If everything checks out and you get a good feeling, you can take them home and introduce them to their new surroundings!
What NPIP Means
NPIP stands for the National Poultry Improvement Plan. It’s a voluntary certification poultry sellers can obtain to demonstrate they use best practices when raising and breeding poultry.
It means they check for and vaccinate against diseases. It’s not a legal requirement, so not all breeders and hatcheries will be NPIP certified. It is a high standard, however, so it’s a plus if the seller you’re buying from are part of the NPIP.
