The Assendelfter is a rare breed of chicken that originated in the Netherlands. It was raised free range in the bog lands of the country and was a popular egg layer until the Leghorn replaced it.
Today, it is only owned by a few small breeders in the Netherlands and is actively being protected by heritage breed associations. The breed remains rare outside of the Netherlands.
Some Things to Know About Assendelfts Hoen Chicken
The Assendelfter has a rose comb, white earlobes, and slate-blue legs. There are three different color varieties: citron, gold, or silver penciled. Hens have regular markings on their bodies, while the cocks almost always are uniformly colored and have fanned tail feathers.
Assendelfters have a light and slim build with a high-positioned tail. The wings are tightly tucked into the body, and they have orange-red eyes.
